Geena Davis and her former husband, director Renny Harlin,attempted to pick up the pieces after the debacle of their box-office disaster, Cutthroat Island. What they came up with was this repulsive ode to American film noir, based on a script by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) about an amnesiac schoolteacher (Davis) who searches for her true identity and finds she is actually a secret agent immersed in a deadly plot to topple the government. Mechanistic in its violence, obnoxious in its attitude, the film makes Davis, a once-promising actress, nothing more than a special effect. She tosses one to sadists in the audience by allowing her character to be beaten, punched unconscious, and tortured. --Tom Keogh

We (my husband & I) saw this movie YEARS ago and never forgot it. This movie has come up in conversation over the years and we've only seen it maybe twice. I love Geena anyway, but after seeing this movie with her kicking some serious butt we have often wondered why she hasn't made more of these? It was WOW back then and will always have that "WOW, who knew she could do that!?!!" factor to it. A nice surprise from an otherwise usually sweet down to earth girl. Can't wait to see it again, we're into our "re-runs" and [ASIN:0780618548 The Long Kiss Goodnight] is a must again see on our list. 5 stars all the way!

I won't summarize the plot (you can find that elsewhere), but I will say this:
-I think this is THE best Samuel L Jackson movie there is. He is hilarious.
-The Bourne series copied a lot from this movie. I know they are (loosely) based on older books, but the pacing and action in this movie, as well as actor Brian Cox and his ENTIRE CHARACTER are lifted from this movie.
-It is simply two things that movies need to be: FUN and FUNNY.
You will absolutely enjoy this movie.

I won't recap the movie (I hate when people do that in reviews). I'll just say that few action movies by even today's standards are even close to this good. A brilliant execution of the Manchurian Candidate, sleeper spy concept. I f'ing love this movie.
Geena Davis back when Geena Davis was hot (and she is smokin' as a blonde CIA assassin).
By far the most absolutely perfect Samuel L Jackson character. I mean, this is what I imagine he would be like if he never got into movies. Low budget, seedy, foul mouthed, and ill intentioned with just the slightest hint of Hennesey on his breath (incidentally, that's the name of his character). He was never this good again.
I'm serious. It's like less than $7. Buy this.
